چکیده

Reducing power consumption has become one of the biggest challenges in VLSI design. In control-flow intensive designs like networking and controller applications the largest fraction of power consumption in CMOS is caused by signal switches. The presented approach addresses the reduction of switching activity. This is basically done by state assignment concerning a given user-specified input pattern sequence. Besides reducing register switchmgs, power can be saved by e.g. a partial deactivation of the circuit or a parts of it. There is a strong dependency between the used deactivation method, the selection of circuit parts for deactivation, the additional deactivation logic and the state assignment. The aim of this paper is to consider these dependencies in a multi-criteria1 optimization approach. This is done by an unified specification of the additional deactivation costs as constraints for state encoding. The result of our investigation is a multicriterial assignment procedure which enables us to specify an optimal code conceming different criteria.

GALLOP: Genetic Algorithm based Low Power FSM Synthesis by Simultaneous Partitioning and State Assignment

Partitioning has been shown to be an effective method for synthesis of low power finite state machines. In this approach, an FSM is partitioned into two or more coupled sub-machines such that most of the time only one of the sub-machines is active. In this paper, we present a GA based approach for simultaneous partitioning and state assignment of finite state machines with power reduction as th...

Profiling-based State Assignment for Low Power Dissipation

In this paper we address the problem of state assignment for Finite State Machines (FSMs). We target the reduction of power dissipation in FSM circuits by minimizing the switching activity in the state register. We introduce a novel state assignment method that utilizes dynamic loop information extracted from FSM profiling data. We propose three different loop-based state assignment algorithms:...

A Strategy for Low Power FSM-Design by Reducing Switching Activity

Power dissipation is growing to be one of the most crucial parameter in the design of VLSI systems. Focusing the low power design of synchronous finite state machines (FSM) our paper presents a novel approach to reduce switching events by a profiling-based strategy. The idea of this strategy is to combine the deactivation of special self-loops with an appropriate state assignment. Analyzing the...

Upper and lower bounds on FSM switching activity

This paper obtains upper and lower bounds for the switching activity on the state lines of a finite state machine (FSM) that is driven with typical input sequences. By exploiting the symmetries between the Hamming distances of state encodings, we obtain tight bounds on the average Hamming distance, which is proportional to the average switching activity and the overall power dissipation of the ...

Evolutionary Algorithm for State Assignment of Finite State Machines

Introduction A significant part of digital circuits is constituted by sequential synchronous circuits behaviour of which can be presented by a finite state machine (FSM). So nothing strange the FSM synthesis methods are continually developed (cf. the monographs [14, 19] or [17, 8]). One of the most crucial steps in FSM synthesis is the encoding of FSM states referred to as the state assignment ...
